So, the Smart Phone. Practically everyone has one at this point. And if you don’t, you’re pretty much out of the internet circle. The simple idea of having different applications in one device began way back in 1992. Oh yeah, 20 years ago. MIND BLOWING. It’s been 20 years and only about 5 or 6 years ago did the Smart Phone really blow up… all thanks to the iPhone from Apple. But, who made the first Smart Phone? I thought it would be Nokia. Or Blackberry. Nope. I was wrong. The first Smart Phone was designed by a joint project with IBM and BellSouth and was named the SIMON.

Here is a picture of the beast.

The SIMON by IBM was first shown at the COMDEX (Computer and Technology Trade Show) held in Las Vegas. Just a year later, the SIMON went on sale to the public in 1993. Some of the major applications that came with the SIMON included; Calendar, Address Book, World Clock, Calculator, Note Pad, Email and Games. Holy moly, the first time I read that, I had to do a double take. Now days, those sorts of things are on basic phones. Let alone current Smart Phones. Simple things such as these you just expect to be in phones now days. But I’d be willing to bet, these were pretty cutting edge. Not only did it have these applications on the phone, it included a touch screen. So no, Apple was not the first to integrate that into a smartphone either.

Pretty incredible just how quickly things have changed. Even just in a matter of a year things have turned full circle.

Shinya Out.
